Now - March 31
Beginning 6 p.m. Friday, March 5, cleaning and coating work will start on the railroad bridge over Capitol Avenue near the Indiana Convention Center.  The project is anticipated to be completed on or before March 31.  Capitol Avenue between Louisiana and South streets will be restricted to one lane of traffic for this project.  Pedestrian traffic and one lane of vehicle traffic will be maintained on Capitol Avenue throughout this time.  Motorists should use West, Meridian or Pennsylvania streets as alternate routes during the project to avoid congestion caused by the lane restriction.

This lane restriction is in addition to those already in place for the Convention Center expansion project:

  • The west two lanes of Capitol Avenueare closed between Georgia and South streets.  The sidewalk on the west side of Capitol Avenuebetween Georgia and South streets also remains closed.
  • The north curb lane of South Streetis closed from Capitol Avenueto approximately 100 feet east of Missouri StreetTwo-way traffic is being maintained on South Street.  The sidewalk on the north side of South Streetbetween Capitol Avenueand Missouri Streetis also closed.

Now - May 1
Construction related to the new Wishard Hospital will close three lanes of West Michigan Street through May 1, leaving only one lane open.  The three southern lanes on Michigan Street will be closed from Lansing Street (1200 W. Michigan St.) to Porto Alegre Street (1400 W. Michigan St.).

Through traffic is encouraged to use alternate routes of 16th, 10th or Washington streets during this time to avoid congestion related to the project.

Mass Ave Cultural District
Construction on the Northeast Corridor of the Indianapolis Cultural Trail has begun in the Mass Ave Cultural District. The Northeast Corridor of the trail will run from Alabama and North streets to the Monon Trail at 10th Street.  The contractor is anticipating several traffic restrictions throughout the construction period. Here are the current restrictions:

Massachusetts Avenue/Bellefontaine Street from College Avenue to 10th Street is temporarily one-way northbound. This restriction will be in place until late summer of 2010. From now on, left turns to westbound 10th Street from Bellefontaine Street will be prohibited: motorists will only be able to proceed eastbound on 10th Street from Bellefontaine Street. Tenth Street will also have some restrictions during this time period but traffic will be maintained in both directions.  Parking will remain available on the north side of Mass Ave from College Avenue to Bellefontaine Street during construction and the businesses at the east end of Mass Ave will remain open and accessible.

New Jersey Street between Walnut Street and North Street is temporarily one-way northbound with parking available in the east curb lane during this construction. This restriction will be in place until approximately June 15.

Walnut Street from New Jersey Street to Park Avenue is temporarily one-way eastbound with parking in the south curb lane. This traffic restriction will be in place until approximately Sept. 1.

The alley between Massachusetts Avenue and College Avenue(behind the Scholars Inn) is temporarily closed to traffic. This closure will be in effect until approximately Aug. 1.

Indiana Convention Center Expansion
Trucks will be entering and exiting the site along Capitol Avenue in order to haul away large amounts of heavy debris.
Existing street and sidewalk restrictions continue:

  • The west two lanes of Capitol Avenue are closed between Georgia and South streets. The sidewalk on the west side of Capitol between Georgia and South streets will also remain closed.

JW Marriott Complex Construction
There are also lane closures and traffic restrictions around the site of the JW Marriott complex near the convention center. The curb lane bordering the site is closed on Washington, West and Maryland streets at this location for the next 18-24 months. The sidewalks on the site are also closed during this time. Pedestrians should use the sidewalks opposite the construction site and along Schumacher Way to access Victory Field during this project.

Some additional lane closures and traffic restrictions will soon be instituted around the site of the JW Marriott complex.

  • Traffic on Maryland Street between Schumacher Way and West Street will be restricted to two lanes at the site May 11 through approximately June 5 to accommodate placement of an additional crane.  During this time eastbound traffic on Washington and Maryland streets between White River Parkway and West Street should seek alternate routes to avoid congestion.  The suggested alternate route is north on White River Parkway West Drive to New York Street and then east on New York Street to West Street.
  • The curb lanes bordering the site remain closed on Washington, West and Maryland streets.  The sidewalks on the site are also closed.  Pedestrians should use the sidewalks opposite the construction site and along Schumacher Way to access Victory Field during this project.

Please plan your travel through Downtown accordingly.
